The Global Conservation Central America team has just kicked off a new GC Project with the Naso People of Panama to protect La Amistad International Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Working with both the government’s park authorities and a new 60-person Indigenous Protection Force, Global Conservation will deploy Global Park Defense to protect over 400,000 acres of intact, pristine and highly biodiverse forests and wildlife habitats.

Programme for Belize received a $150,000 grant from Global Conservation to support the protection of the Greater Belize Maya Forest, which totals almost 10% of Belize’s total land area. The grant supports five rangers, who will patrol the Greater Belize Maya Forest in order to prevent and reduce illegal activities that threaten the biodiversity and environmental services of this region.

Global Conservation is kicking off deployment of Global Park Defense in Yasuní National Park, Ecuador, one of the Amazon’s bastions for biodiversity. Yasuní, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the last continuous tracts of virgin tropical forest in eastern Ecuador. The park sits at the intersection of the Amazon, the Andes, and the equator, converging several unique ecosystems and creating one of the richest biodiversity hotspots on the planet.

For four years, Global Conservation and OneReef have partnered on the development and implementation of an innovative and highly-impactful enforcement initiative to protect coral reefs and local fisheries in Palau. Important progress has been made during the last four years since the formation of the Pacific Guardians program, and significant growth in impact is projected in the near and longer-term as the initiative is solidified in Palau and has the opportunity to replicate in other Pacific regions. 

Turneffe Atoll, home to more than 500 species of fish, sea turtles, manatees, and more, is one of the most important and pristine marine ecosystems in the Mesoamerican Reef, and also serves as a model for other coastal and island MPAs. Global Conservation is now supporting the deployment of Marine Monitors to provide 24/7 monitoring for response to illegal activities.

Carpathian National Nature Park (CNNP) is Ukraine’s first and largest national park and the largest protected area in the Carpathian region. In 2021, Global Conservation and our partners made substantial progress in improving park and wildlife protection for CNNP by deploying Global Park Defense, as well as initating biodiversity monitoring of critically endangered species like the European Mink.  

With the Indochinese tiger facing extinction in 2015, Global Conservation began working with The Thai Government and WCS Thailand to protect the few remaining animals. We've just released a video about the plight of tigers and our work to save them.

Nestled in the heart of Indonesia’s archipelago lie the volcanic islands of Komodo National Park, home of the legendary Komodo dragon. Despite efforts to protect the park, KNP is under threat of further human impact. In partnership with Komodo Survival Program (KSP), Global Conservation has supported efforts to provide the technology and resources needed to more effectively protect KNP.

National Geographic recently published an article underscoring Uganda’s immense conservation progress in recent decades. “Historically, the country has been praised for its environmental efforts, and behind the scenes of its 10 national parks and multiple reserves are individuals working hard keep them safe.”

Global Conservation is developing a Global Park Defense program to protect the Sierra del Divisor through joint activities with the Peruvian government and indigenous communities, ancestrally recognized as forest guardians. GC has signed an Inter-institutional Cooperation Agreement with Sierra del Divisor National Park administration (PNSD) under the umbrella of SERNANP, the country-level authority in forest protection. 

Global Conservation has recently supported the deployment of the first marine-hardened, off-grid Mobile Marine Monitor (M3) system in Machalilla National Park, Ecuador. The rocky reefs and coral communities around these islands harbor stunning biodiversity, making Machalilla one of South America’s most important MPAs. The M3 will help protect this unique ecosystem.

Global Conservation is launching a pilot Global Park Defense deployment in Parque Nacional Natural Los Katíos, Colombia, to assist in protection against illegal logging, land clearing, and wildlife poaching. Los Katíos is the only protected area in this part of Colombia, a refuge for species that may otherwise go extinct. In March 2021, we went on a mission to Los Katíos to determine the potential for a Global Park Defense Program to protect against illegal land clearing, logging, and hunting.

Global Conservation is excited to be launching a new Global Park Defense project in Darien National Park, Panama. In this new video, we introduce the park and GC's program there.

For the past two years, we have been deploying Global Park Defense for park and wildlife protection in Bardiya National Park, Nepal in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation of Nepal.

Our primary goals were to support species recovery through the strengthening of law enforcement and regular biological monitoring in all lowland protected areas of Nepal including Bardiya and Banke National Parks.

Rudi Putra has worked tirelessly to save the Leuser Ecosystem of Sumatra, Indonesia for the past twelve years. As the director of the conservation NGO Forum Konservasi Leuser (Leuser Conservation Forum), Rudi has been a critical partner in fighting illegal logging and land encroachment in the last place on Earth where wild rhinos, elephants, tigers and orangutans still coexist.

In January, Myanmar’s military launched a coup against the country’s most popular political party, seizing full control of the government and ending a brief period of quasi-democracy that had begun in 2011. Political stability is key for successful conservation, and unfortunately this unrest has led to the closure of Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park (AKNP), one of our Global Park Defense sites.

Wildlife Alliance, Global Conservation’s partner in protecting Cardamom National Park in Cambodia, has secured over $10 million in long-term funding for park and wildlife protection from the sales of carbon credits. This program will help preserve a critical part of the Cardamom Mountains Rainforest Ecoregion – one of the 200 most important locations for biodiversity conservation on the planet. Protecting these forests is critical for achieving our planet’s climate goals.

Global Conservation is supporting TrailGuard AI, a revolutionary next-generation trail camera alert system that will help protect against human-wildlife conflict and illegal activities like poaching and logging. We caught up with Dr. Eric Dinerstein, who is developing this technology with RESOLVE and CVEDIA, to chat about TrailGuard. 

To protect Central Cardamom Mountains National Park, Global Conservation has been working with Wildlife Alliance and Conservation International. We’ve been deploying new technologies, including command and control, cellular trailcams, aerial surveillance and targeted ranger patrols for increasing the effectiveness of forest and wildlife protection. Our partners made incredible progress in 2020.

We are eagerly anticipating the launch of SpaceX’s Starlink, a satellite-based, broadband internet system. Widely available internet access will be a huge boon for parks in remote areas that frequently suffer from a lack of communications infrastructure, often including a lack of basic cell coverage. 

TrailGuard AI is a revolutionary next-generation cellular trail camera that will help protect against human-wildlife conflict and illegal activities like poaching and logging. With its on-board artificial intelligence, incredibly small size, and long battery life, TrailGuard AI is revolutionizing protected area surveillance.

GC is partnering with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand to protect a critical wildlife habitat area of over 120,000 ha for recovery of endangered tigers and large mammals.

In a great victory for conservation, our partners at the Bushlife Conservancy have announced a major milestone: no elephants have been poached during the last year in one of Zimbabwe's flagship parks.

Over the last few years, Global Conservation has been involved in the deployment of new technology that is revolutionizing archaeology. With our support, scientists from the Mirador Basin Project have used the Light Detection and Ranging Tool, known as LiDAR, to uncover thousands of ancient Maya temples, pyramids and city complexes deep in the jungles of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, Guatemala.

Global Conservation is working with Forum Konservasi Leuser and Forest, Nature and Environment of Aceh to protect the Leuser Ecosystem on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Leuser is the last place on earth where wild tigers, orangutans, elephants and rhinos coexist, and its 2.6 million hectares comprise one of the last remaining intact rainforests in all of Indonesia.

In February 2019, Global Conservation launched our Global Park Defense Program in the Sierra del Divisor National Park, Peru. Sierra del Divisor is one of the most bio-diverse national parks in all of the Amazonas and facing extensive threats.

Global Conservation is supporting the non-profit Wildlife Alliance to deploy new technologies for increasing the effectiveness of forest and wildlife protection in Cardamom National Park, Cambodia. In 2019 and the first part of 2020, Wildlife Alliance has made substantial progress toward accomplishing their objectives.

Global Conservation’s Carbon for Forests is the first forest-based carbon offset program which directly funds the protection and restoration of tropical forests, using advanced satellite monitoring combined with ISO-standard monitoring and verification.

Global Conservation is funding the construction of a Smart Fence in South Africa’s Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park (HiP), a rhino conservation hotspot and the oldest proclaimed game reserve in Africa. The new fence will detect and deter rhino poachers, protecting HiP’s wildlife and keeping rangers safer.

Over the past decade, snares, which are traps made of wire or rope, have become the biggest threat to wildlife in Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos. That’s why the work of our partner, Wildlife Alliance (WA), is so critical. WA has a team of 110 rangers who work tirelessly to remove snares from Cambodia’s Cardamom Mountains. One of the reasons that deforestation is out of control is because it often happens out of sight of people who have the power to stop it. Analyzing satellite data can take years, and by the time large-scale deforestation is identified, the damage has already been done. It’s hard to manage what you can’t measure. Many of the world’s coastal marine ecosystems have been trawled, polluted, and overfished, and Marine Protected Areas have become our last bastions for saving coastal and reef ecosystems. MPAs provide a sanctuary for fish and other marine wildlife, supporting resilient marine ecosystems. Global Conservation focuses on providing the systems, technology and training needed for the protection of Marine Protected Areas – what we call Global Park Defense.

Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park lies at an ancient geological and sociocultural crossroads that lends it remarkable historical and biological significance. Global Conservation is deploying Global Park Defense to protect this treasure. Our partners, the Georgian Agency for Protected areas, have made great strides forward this year.

Global Conservation is supporting Global Park Defense in Mana Pools World Heritage Site and the adjacent areas in the Lower Zambezi River Valley, Zimbabwe. In the first six months of 2020, Bushlife Support Unit has made excellent progress in the protection of elephants and other wildlife in Mana Pools, while the Akashinga team of women rangers has protected the neighboring community areas.  

In an exciting win for wildlife, conservation groups have released footage of endangered Indochinese tigers from new areas of western Thailand, reviving hope that this species can recover in a country where they were almost driven to extinction by poaching and habitat destruction.

Borjomi Rangers Equipped with Long-Distance Kits for Patrolling Largest National Park in theMountainous Caucuses

Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park is Myanmar's oldest and largest national park. The park protects the largest remaining tracts of intact forest in the country, harboring mixed deciduous forest, evergreen forest and pine forest. These pristine woodlands protect important species like leopards, Asian elephants, sun bears, and Asian wild dogs. Global Conservation is partnering with the Myanmar Ministry of the Environment to deploy Global Park Defense to protect this critical ecosystem.

Several US Senators have reinforced their support for the Mirador-Calakmul Maya Security and Conservation Partnership Act of 2019 (S3131). The bipartisan bill, supported additionally by a coalition of the Guatemalan Congress and Presidency, Guatemalan community and tourism associations, international environmental conservation groups, scientists, and others, presents a new vision for conservation and development in the Mirador-Calakmul Basin.

Since the GC Board and advisors visited in May 2019, Sabah Environmental Trust have been very busy deploying Global Park Defense to protect DaMaI Rainforest Complex and to move forward with a UNESCO World Heritage nomination.

Since 2018, Global Conservation has been supporting the work of the Uganda Conservation Foundation (UCF) and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to restore wildlife and tourism numbers in Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda.
