GC Deploys Marine Radar in Islas Marías National Marine Park, Nayarit, Mexico

In coordination with SEMAR and thanks to the support of Global Conservation and PRONATURE Northwest, remote monitoring technologies called 'Marine Monitors' are being installed in the Islands Maria, which consist of radars, long-range cameras, and AIS devices. With this it is sought to strengthen surveillance actions in the Islas Maria Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These teams were also adapted to a weather station that will allow them to count on weather measurements in real time.

This impact report covers 2023-2024 progress and outlines the challenges ahead for our Marine Protection work in Baja Sur, California, Mexico.  

GC has deployed multiple Global Park Defense (GPD) systems for Marine Protection beginning in 2020 focused on the Eastcape of Baja Sur from Loreto Bay National Park in the north to San Jose Island and Espiritu Santo National Marine Park off La Paz. As well, GC Mexico works to protect community fishing reserves from Agua Verde in the north to Boca Del Alamo in the south.

GC supports the attachment of the Belize Coast Guard to TASA enforcement operations for armed support to deal with the dangerous situation of aggressive illegal fishers as well as narcotics traffickers. Hundreds of tons of cocaine move northward through Belize each year, resulting in people being murdered in the atolls and piracy. By providing critical support to the Coast Guard to help Turneffe Atoll in marine enforcement, we are improving the effectiveness and safety of marine enforcement officers.
