Guanacaste Conservation Area in Costa Rica is leading the way in environmental monitoring and response to threats like illegal hunting and forest fires. They have installed smart camera surveillance, a state-of-the-art monitoring technology, which is already helping to protect ecosystems.

This report summarizes key conservation efforts implemented by Global Conservation's Global Park Defense (GPD) in collaboration with SINAC across Costa Rica’s protected areas, including Corcovado National Park (PNC), Guanacaste Conservation Area (ACG), La Amistad International Park (PILA), and Golfo Dulce Forest Reserve (RFGD), during the first quarter of 2025. 

Global Conservation is supporting WildAid's critical work to protect the Cocos Marine Conservation Area (ACMC), as well as developing and implementing a state-of-the-art Marine Protection System (MPS) to strengthen ACMC's monitoring, control, and surveillance (MCS) capacity.

Global Conservation published a new Marine Protection Handbook for MPA Managers, focusing on effective protection using marine radars and rapid response teams to combat illegal fishing and wildlife poaching.

World Heritage Site La Amistad International Park (Parque Internacional La Amistad, PILA) carries out patrols with indigenous bodyguards to combat illegal acts including hunting, fishing, and logging. PILA also steps up tourism and community involvement while focusing on the health of biological corridors, and much more.

Global Conservation is working to scale up Marine Protection by deploying our Global Park Defense system combined with an innovative Marine Monitor (M2) radar system developed by ProtectedSeas combined with UAV Drones to enable 24/7 surveillance against illegal fishing and marine wildlife poaching.
