GC Project Director for the Derawan Archipelago Publishes “Empty Promises Won’t Save Marine Ecosystems”

Dadang Mujiono, GC Project Director, writes for the publication Public Syndicate to call out the lack of support for protecting critical marine ecosystems, with the main focus being on Indonesia. Indonesia, despite having one of the most beautiful and critical oceanic ecosystems on Earth containing vast stretches of intact coral reefs, lacks overall protection.
The Derawan Archipelago, a collection of tropical islands with vibrant coral reefs, boasts a stunning underwater landscape. It ranks among the most biologically diverse regions in Indonesia and serves as a critical protein source for communities across the Sulawesi Sea, including Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Despite its natural beauty and ecological importance, the Derawan Archipelago faces significant challenges in both the fishing and tourism sectors.
2024 was a huge year for GC, led by Jeff Morgan. This video shows land and sea protection work in Guatemala, Uganda, Malaysia, Ukraine, Indonesia, Ecuador, Cambodia, Panama, and Cameroon.
This year, GC made significant strides in our conservation efforts across the Derawan Archipelago. We began by facilitating the establishment of the Berau Marine Protected Area (MPA) Task Force, led by the Berau Regency Government Fisheries Department, followed by the Air and Water Police of Berau and East Kalimantan and the Berau Navy.
Welcome to the third installment of the War on Nature series, presented by Global Conservation. Join us as renowned conservation photojournalist Paul Hilton delves into the challenges facing the Derawan Archipelago, Indonesia, a region celebrated as the "Jewel of Indonesia."
Global Conservation published a new Marine Protection Handbook for MPA Managers, focusing on effective protection using marine radars and rapid response teams to combat illegal fishing and wildlife poaching.
Thanks to Marine Protection programs, authorities successfully arrest perpetrators connected to stealing turtle eggs and illegal fishing using fish bombs.
Known as the "Coral Triangle", GC invests as a partner in a chain of islands that create the Berau Marine Protected Area. The MPA is a stunning area of marine life that supports thousands of different species.
